WHAT IS FD?

Familial Dysautonomia (FD) is a fatal neurological degenerative genetic disease that attacks the autonomic nervous system of children from birth and causes severe retching, painful headaches, oxygen deprivation, inability to eat orally (nearly all must have feedings through stomach tubes), dangerous fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate, and much more.  FD affects many hundreds of children who remain intellectually bright while becoming increasingly physically disabled.  Sixty percent of these children die before they reach their eighteenth birthday.

 Sixteen-year-old Daniela wished for a more normal life, instead of taking nourishment through a feeding tube and spending many hours on an oxygen machine.   She often retched for hours and had to go to the hospital often with pneumonia. She was Cure FD's Spokesperson for over three years, until she died of FD on March 6, 2007. Yet a better life for all the hundreds of other children with FD can be theirs with enough funding for the research now in progress!
